An update about The Globe and a call for your input!
Inhabitants of Milverton Parish (comprising the villages of Milverton and Preston Bowyer) will no doubt have heard about the recent proposal being considered by the Parish Council, for the Council to purchase The Globe and keep it as a parish asset. The current model being assessed would involve a three layered structure:
Tier 1: Milverton Parish Council would be the owner of the pub. This would be paid for by borrowing money from the public works loan board and repaying that with an initial increase on the parish precept with the hope that rent from The Globe will cover it in the longer term.
Tier 2: A new Community Benefit Society would be set up to have a repairing lease on the building and to put in place someone to run the pub. The CBS will be run by a committee of volunteers and membership would be open to all members of the community.
Tier 3: A tenant or manager (currently tenant is the front runner option) will be put in place by the CBS to do the day to day running of the pub.
Right now, work is already being undertaken to assess the viability of the above proposal. No final decisions have yet been taken. One crucial thing that is needed right now, is information.
Do you have a skill that might help with the purchase, renovation, running of a community pub?
Would you like to have a say in the running of The Globe once it’s back open? If so, would you be willing to buy a CBS membership (cost will be no more than £10)?
Are you able to contribute financially to the works that need to be carried out on the building to get it up and running again?
A survey has been set up for you to answer these questions, or if you’d prefer, jot down your answers on a piece of paper with your contact details if you are happy to give them and leave it in the feedback box located in the Book Nook.
